Tim Hartnett is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Santa Cruz. Marriage Counseling
Counseling couples constitutes about half of Tim Hartnett's psychotherapy practice. He believes relationship partners usually need more than just a safe place to talk about their relationship. They benefit from new tools for communicating and they need competent coaching to employ these new skills. Otherwise, they may just repeat the old patterns that brought them to counseling in the first place.

The first couple counseling session typically begins with introductions and a chance for each party to describe what they hope to address in counseling. Then Dr. Hartnett will ask the couple to talk about an issue that is currently important to them. As the discussion ensues, Tim helps the partners identify where their communication could improve. This includes offering new communication skills and coaching each partner use the new skills to successfully communicate about the issue at hand.

Once resolution is achieved, the therapy will  address another issue that may be troubling the couple. Again, Dr. Hartnett will coach them in new communication skills. After several such discussions certain themes are likely to repeat. These themes are clues to how each of the partners may both be triggering sensitivities in the other. At first, these sensitivities may be what the partners find most troubling about each other. But with greater understanding, the couple can discover that the ways they have been frustrating each other can be turned into ways that they can find greater understanding. Then the relationship becomes a healing partnership instead of a repeating cycle of frustration.

Through couples therapy with an experienced therapist, partners learn to be more effective communicators. Couples can also learn how they can be a powerful source of acceptance, intimacy, and healing for one another.

Individual Counseling
To help people deal with a wide range of issues, the field of counseling has developed many different theoretical orientations. This array can be confusing to anyone who has not studied psychotherapy in depth. Dr. Hartnett's website offers a good description of the many approaches  to therapy he uses.

Tim was trained in many approaches to therapy in his masters, doctorate and post-doctorate study. Exactly how he works depends on the goals and needs of each particular client. This eclectic approach allows Tim to address the therapy to the specific needs of each client.

Mediation
Tim Hartnett, PhD is also a gifted mediator. Mediation helps people reach agreement when they are at an impass. The mediator serves as a neutral party, facilitating communication, and focusing the discussion toward resolving differences. The mediating parties stay empowered throughout the process. Any agreement that emerges must be approved by all participants. The mediator does not render an opinion or judgment.

There are multiple advantages to reaching agreement through mediation. Costly law suits can be avoided. Working relationships can be maintained. All participants retain a sense of dignity and self-determination. Mediated agreements usually have very high levels of follow through, so enforcement of the agreement is usually not an issue.

Dr. Hartnett facilitates agreement by carefully attending to the process of negotiation. He will interrupt unproductive communications in order to keep the discussion safe and respectful. The underlying concerns of all parties are elicited in detail before the discussion moves to solution proposals. This allows the people to collaboratively craft a solution that neither side may have conceived prior to the mediation.

In rare instances where agreement is not reached, a clearer understanding of the parties' irreconcilable differences is gained. This understanding allows for the parties to generate a peaceful plan for disassociation.

Dr Hartnett worked extensively with the Santa Cruz Collaborative Practice group of attorneys, developing local applications of the collaborative law approach to divorce. He currently works in association with the Santa Cruz Conflict Resolution Center on Soquel Ave. Santa Cruz 95062.

Facilitation
