I provide individual and couples psychotherapy and diagnostic assessment services to a diverse patient population. Trained as a clinical psychologist, I assist people who are facing significant life transitions and changes, have experienced trauma or loss, or are dealing with psychiatric illnesses, such as depression and anxiety.

What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a collaborative partnership between a psychologist and a patient (or patients). People often consider psychotherapy when they feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of sadness and helplessness, when emotional difficulties make it hard for them to function effectively at school, work or home, when their behaviors are harmful to themselves or to others, or when they are troubled by emotional difficulties facing family members or close friends.

Can Psychotherapy Help You?
Research suggests that psychotherapy effectively decreases patients depression and anxiety and related symptoms, such as pain, fatigue and nausea. Psychotherapy has also been found to increase survival time for heart surgery and cancer patients, and it can have a positive effect on the bodys immune system. Not surprisingly, research increasingly supports the idea that emotional health and physical health are very closely linked and that psychotherapy can improve a persons overall health status.

There is convincing evidence that most people who have at least several sessions of psychotherapy are far better off than untreated individuals with emotional difficulties. One major study showed that 50 percent of patients noticeably improved after eight sessions while 75 percent of individuals in therapy improved by the end of six months.

Though I work with a very diverse patient population, a portion of my practice is dedicated to the specialty population of working with physicians, psychologists, nurses, other healthcare professionals as well as attorneys, architects and other executive professionals.

I specialize in working with professionals who are experiencing difficulties with their work.  Many professionals struggle with work relationships, dealing with difficult colleagues or abusive bosses.  Others have trouble staying focused on work or find it difficult to transition from work to home and maintain a balance between these two worlds.  Sometimes professionals find themselves burning out and not deriving personal satisfaction from their career, and sometimes they contemplate changing jobs or even entire fields.

Healthcare Professionals
Dr Heitt offers psychotherapy for healthcare professionalsIn addition to my general clinical and consultative work, I also specialize in working with physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physical therapists, acupuncturists and other licensed healthcare professionals who, for a variety of reasons, may be experiencing difficulties in their professional environment.  Burnout, job dissatisfaction, poor balance between work and home life and legal troubles such as medical malpractice suits are just a few examples of factors that can significantly reduce a professionals effectiveness and productivity.  Similarly, relationship and communication difficulties at work and at home can also interfere with the professionals well-being and professional success.

Anger Issues:
Many clinicians and programs offer structured anger management classes.  In theory, this sounds like a great way for people to learn to better control their anger.  However I have found that many people find these classes to be somewhat superficial and not necessarily very relevant to their personal situation.  Because of this, I have decided to deal with each person who seeks my assistance in managing their anger as a unique individual.

If you want to deal with your anger problems, I will strive to understand your difficulties from your perspective as well as the perspective of those around you, such as your family, friends and coworkers.  Once you and I share a common understanding of this, and we have identified triggers for your outbursts, we will collaboratively review the material that you would have learned in an anger management class.  When this information is taught without a shared, thorough understanding of the individual and his or her environment, people have difficulty applying this new knowledge in their real world.

Disruptive Professionals:
In the late 1990&#8242;s I began working with impaired, distressed and disruptive physicians, nurses, psychologists, executives and senior leaders at Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System. As the Associate Director of the internal Employee Assistance Program and an ex-officio member of the Professional Assistance Committee (a sub-committee of the Johns Hopkins Hospitals Medical Board) I was the chief psychologist/consultant for such issues. I bring these years of invaluable experience and perspective to each and every consultative and clinical encounter in my private practice.
What is a disruptive professional?

Much has been written in the literature about professional impairment, and the majority of this has focused on alcohol and drug-related impairment. Professionals can also suffer impairment secondary to psychiatric illness, such as depressive and anxiety disorders, and physical illness or injury, such as traumatic head injury or senility. Even more common are everyday life stressors including relationship difficulties, concerns about children and mourning the death of a loved one; these factors often negatively affect ones performance.

Separate from these types of difficulties is the behaviorally disruptive professional. A disruptive professional can undermine morale, diminish productivity, increase turnover of staff, pose safety hazards and generally have a negative influence upon others in the work environment. In the extreme, the behaviorally disruptive professional acts in such a way that others may feel personally intimidated or fear physical harm.
