I was also in this group home in the 80's. I was 16 and most of us in the house were on our last chance. The group home used loud confrontation, group pressure to modify behavior, similar to boot camp. This approach worked well for me. I graduated from High school, I have mentored at risk youth since the 80's. I do not employ loud confrontation as that is a last resort tactic in my opinion.
I feel bad for the kids that did not need or respond to Home Aways program, we all need different influences to get on track. I am grateful Home Away was there to help me.
Thank you to ALL the staff and my group home brothers, I am a better person because of my experiences there.
I was in two Home Away group homes in the early 1980s, when I was 13 and 14 years old, and can confirm that screaming in your face (or "loud confrontation" in the Home Away vernacular) was widely used to frighten and control residents. Several decades--and tens of thousands of dollars in psychotherapy later--and I'm still scarred by the experience. No matter how desperate you are, please do not torture your kid by sending him or her to one of these abusive facilities.
back in the late 1980's this place was the worst place on earth. They way they treated us was horrible. When confronting a person, they would gather around, including staff and YELL, scream and spit as they were screaming in your face. You always felt like you were walking on needles. Always paranoid you might say or do something wrong and get ganged up on. When I finally was able to go home i swore to my parent, i would rather disappear then ever go back to this place. The shelter for homeaway was just as bad. I still have bad feelings about this place and i was 16/17 in the late 80's!!
