How did I find Dr. Allen? It was absolutely random: my pit-bull mix broke a tooth munching on that indestructible bone. I lived on a very small salary working for non-profit and regular vet teeth cleaning prices were way out of my reach. Also, I was still getting used at the time to the amount of discrimination my newly adopted brindle pit-mix was receiving for “just existing” So it dawned on me to turn this around and reach out for help to people who cared about the breed. I wrote to few pit-bull rescue organizations’ websites and this is where one girl responded saying - there is this great vet who loves pits and their off-springs, affordable, check him out. I have been going to Dr. Allen ever since then (2004) and will continue for as long as my family resides in Ohio. In 2008, I moved away to the east coast but since my parents live in Columbus I plan all of my vet visits around my trips home as much as I can. LOVE the staff and care!!!! It never changes and always superb. The prices are very friendly which helps me to keep both of my two mutts (who both have a ton of issues) healthy!!!
First I was sold on the very affordable teeth cleaning which I could not afford at the time with any other vet. Plus the hours allow anybody to find a convenient time to schedule an appointment However, it is this one incident that totally got me hooked: in the early fall of 2005, my 1-yr old whippet terrier mix, Roxy, unbeknown to me, ingested pieces of torn up t-shirt while staying with my friend and her dog for the day. Then in the evening, she ate her food when she got home. Everything seemed normal but about 4-5am – she woke me up breathing heavily… drooling, wheezing. Roxy was in bad shape and getting worse as the food was blocked by the junk she got a hold of. This was my first k9 emergency and I in panic… frantically dialed Dr. Allen's office…What happened next is what I will never forget: the phone was answered on 2nd ring by Dr. Allen and in a manner as it if were 5:00 in the afternoon and not 5:00 AM! He said: “Dr. Allen, How may I help you?” He calmly gave me directions on how to quickly resolve the situation and we were golden. Needless to say Roxy was never again left unsupervised again and nothing was left in her reach when alone!
I am not sure if Dr. Allen still answers the phone at 5:00 AM  and I certainly hope that you will never have to call or see a vet at that time of the night but I certainly will vouch for Pleasant Valley Vet Hospital being the best I have ever found!
