He is the best doc I ever had and I have had many. He is the only one of many that have gotten my hormones right the first time and I lost 31 pounds and feel better than ever. I lost the weight effortlessly, my hair is growing back and he also has helped me with my fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue/chronic lyme disease issues. He listens and respects me as a person and as a patient and is willing to go the extra mile in caring for me. A doctor like that is worth his weight in gold.

I made an appointment with Dr. Oglesbay because he was fairly close and an acclaimed hormone expert (from his website) and I've been having a lot of hormone imbalance in my peri-menopausal years. I only went to see Dr. O. once, but that was enough for me. I'm a health care provider myself and so I have some decisive opinions as to how I think a patient should be treated. First of all, I can't say if Dr. O. is a competent hormone physician or not, but I'm not going to give him a chance. Here's why.

The office staff do not follow up in a timely manner (and sometimes not at all). I left messages that were not returned within 2-3 business days and I ended up calling back. Several times the staff told me they faxed me something and I never received it on my reliable work fax. Terrible customer service. Also, after my initial appointment while the doctor was waiting for lab results, nobody followed up with me —ever. I never called back to set up a follow up appt and nobody called me to schedule. A good and professional medical office will follow up with patients proactively, if for no other reason, to make you feel cared about.

I think Dr. O. is EXPENSIVE. He charged me well over $300 just for a one hour initial hormone consultation (in addition to overselling me on expensive supplements).

Office experience: I noticed the "Compassionate Doctor Award" both on Dr. O.'s website and on his waiting room wall. I don't know where that award would have come from. My husband came with me to the appt. and neither of us got the warm fuzzies at all. In fact, Dr. O. didn't interact with me much during the appointment and didn't explain anything to me about his plan of action. The communication was not adequate between physician and patient. For example, when the appt. was finished, he got up and left the room and left us sitting there without any further instructions. The nurse came in and said, "We're all waiting for you out here." We had no idea. She then proceeded to hand me three bottles of expensive supplements and asked how I wanted to pay for them. The doctor hadn't even told me about the supplements or why I was supposed to take them and here I was being asked to buy them. One of the bottles was a $50 bottle of vitamin D! I told the nurse I buy my vitamin D at the grocery store for about $5-10 a bottle and she said, "Well, these are pharmaceutical grade." I refused to buy them but did buy an $80 bottle of joint support to get started and then found the almost exact equivalent later that day at Costco for $20 a giant bottle. He also ordered about 15 lab tests but didn't explain why he was ordering any of them. Fortunately, I am familiar with the tests from my work, but others would have no idea what he was checking or why, and all for a pretty hefty sum of their hard-earned money!

Another thing both my husband and I noticed, which is important to us for a doctor who touts helping people find wellness and health through integrative medicine, is that Dr. O. doesn't look all that healthy himself. He is quite a bit overweight and doesn't look like he takes all that good of care of himself. If you're going to a doctor to get your total health/wellness ironed out, you want to go to an MD who cares about his own health and who practices what he preaches.

Overall, my biggest complaint with Dr. O. is that I feel like he is just like every other average doctor that treats you like a non-person and who doesn't take the time to discuss your health or incorporate your understanding and interaction/feedback with his plan of care. I want a doctor that explains my lack of health to me (why I'm feeling like I am) and what he intends to do to facilitate getting me back to a healthier state. As I said before, I'm a health care provider and he talked over my head a few times and didn't talk enough at others. If I was confused and frustrated when I left, how are others feeling who are not as involved in health care?

In the end, I decided to make the trip to Spokane where there is a truly caring hormone doctor who gets fantastic ratings from all his patients and who has been established for several years.
