I've suffered from nasty dysphoric mania (an agitated "down") for a long time and this "clinician" was recommended. I've seen some good therapists, so maybe I'm a bit spoiled, but van Zoeren showed a shocking lack of knowledge about some of the most basic ideas in psychotherapy. Though three psychiatrists diagnosed me with a form of manic-depression, van Zoeren decided I had "delusional disorder" because I told her I was getting a lot of unwanted contact from an ex-boyfriend. (I guess she decided I was imagining it.) Though she declares herself a skilled practitioner in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), an excellent therapy for many disorders, I ended up buying the textbooks and teaching it to myself. The positives: She makes herself available for brief phone consultations when you're having a hard time; she's not expensive; _very rarely_ she makes an insightful comment. If you are at all forward and wish to take an active role in your therapy, do not see this therapist; she will become insulted. Probably patients who are more passive and quietly helpless--and I'm sometimes that way, too--would do better with van Zoeren. I'm 35 and have been seeing mental health professionals for 20 years; this person is easily one of the two worst therapists I've seen. Really.
