I have been seeing Dr. Bender for five years or more for treatment of my migraine headaches. He is a very thorough physician, exploring all causes for my condition (via a very comprehensive printed questionnaire and interview upon initial visit), and all known treatments, until finally a treatment worked. He is absolutely the most compassionate physician I have ever had. He is always willing to listen to my concerns or possible treatments that I have explored on my own, and takes the time to further either agree/disagree with pursuing that form of treatment. He is a very knowledgeable neurologist and is very informed about the latest treatments for migraine headaches and explores those options in detail with me. He is the third person I have seen in Spokane, WA regarding my recurring migraine headaches that were originally diagnosed when I was a teenager. It wasn't until my very early 40s that my migraine headaches started plaguing me on almost a daily basis. Prior to that, I had them about once a month and only took Headache Strength Excedrin to treat them. None of the other practitioners I have seen required the detailed personal headache history that Dr. Bender asked for as part of the initial consultation, nor have any of the other practitioners spent the time Dr. Bender did in exploring the cause of my migraine headaches and the various options for prevention of migraines. I am now currently on three medications to prevent migraine headaches; Nadolol, which is a beta blocker, Namenda, which is actually an Alzheimer's medication that has been found to be effective at preventing migraine headaches, and Nardil, a MAO inhibitor. I take Zomig when I have the migraine to stop the headache within several hours. Migraine headaches can be very complicated to treat as there are many factors that can cause them, including genetics. Dr. Bender actually takes the time to explore all of these possible causes and explains the causative effect in detail. He then develops a plan to try and eliminate the cause of the headaches/prevent them from recurring. I strongly encourage anyone who has migraine headaches to contact Dr. Bender.
