I trusted my dermatologist when she sent me to this doctor to have my skin cancer removed. The only research I did was the doctor's own website, dumb! It has been almost two months since the cancer on my ncek was surgically removed by Dr. Griego. As far as I can tell, it is gone. There was no follow up appointment with him, so I am making this assumption myself. I would like to describe the experience:

The office is in an old building. It looked clean and had adequate places to sit. There was coffee and snack foods. Oddly, there was a putting green available to the patients. Being outside putting is not something that is appealing when you have skin cancer. Several patients are done on the same day-the majority are seniors (me middle aged). It is a bit disconcerting because the room is filled with people with big bandages on various parts of their bodies. I am someone who would prefer more privacy when undergoing surgery, but that's just me.

The desk staff was very pleasant, as was the medical assistant who brought me to my room. After that, things went downhill. The nurse was cold and not friendly. The doctor turned out to be arrogant and also not friendly (my opinion of course). As I don't like to be examined by male doctors, I made sure to have a full body, cancer scan by my female dermatologist the week before. Dr. Griego wanted me to remove the clothing from my upper body so that he could do a skin check. I politely refused and told him I had been examined by my dermatologist already. He told me I would not be allowed in the OR then because the state requires an exam. Being a nurse, I was suspicious. Finally, he admitted the skin exam was his idea, not the state's. I was upset when he told me that 50% of what he sees is missed by dermatologists. I thought it was wrong of him to disparge other physicians. I also thought, "I need to be checked by my dermatologist every six months for the rest of my life and he is telling me I can't trust her?!" I also told him that doing just the top half of the body did not make sense. What about the bottom half?? Lots of women get sun cancers on their legs. Needless to say, he was quite perturbed with me. He quickly excised my cancer and I never saw him again. I never even had a follow up appt. with him.

The closing of my wound was done by a plastic surgeon. He and his nurses were nice and the closure uneventful. Curiously, I was to have an appointment with the plastic surgeon, at Griego's office, the next week and he (the plastic surgeon) never showed for the appointment. I had my incision examined by Dr. Griego's nurse! Of course, the plastic surgeon still billed my insurance for an appointment, even though he never laid eyes on me.

I truly wish I had checked out some other people's experiences before I went with this doctor. Having cancer, even skin cancer, is such a scary and emotional thing and I was a wreck after my experience at this practice. It took me a couple of months to heal mentally and physically. I wish I had gone with someone who was kind, caring and had a good "bedside manner". I also wish I had gone with someone who worked with me as a team. I care about my health WAY more than any doctor does. I don't want to die prematurely! Because of that, I would never miss my skin checks at my dermatologists. I just want them done by a woman. As far as I am concerned, that is not an unreasonable thing.

Do not use this doctor. His mo should read #1 MOST UNEITHICAL DOCTOR in Arizona. His only interest in patients is for as much money as he can charge, not for their well being or what is best for them.
For a small basel cell cancer removal, he left me disfigured and with a bill for $4,000. I had had one removed before and it cost around $100.00 elsewhere. How does he do this? By milking the healthcare system and improper billing practices. I had a second skin cancer and he said he did not have time to treat it. The truth is he would not make $4,000 if he treated two problems at once. Setting up an appointment to treat it at a different visit makes him an additional $4000.00. If he did the ethical thing and treated it while I was having the first treated, he would not be able to charge another facility fee, and the second area treated is paid by insurance at 50%. He calls his office a surgery center so that he can charge a facility fee. He looks at the cells under a microscope, which is another 800.00 dollars. You pay big bucks to just walk in the door. He charges big bucks for Mohs surgery even though he did not do the Mohs procedure on me, he just cut a huge hold on my face that has left me with a 2 inch scar, and I look like a freak! He never explained that this was a possible outcome. When the scar did not heal, he would not speak to me on the phone, office staff called back and said that I could be put on a waiting list for a consultation in 2 months from now.
