Anesthesiologist Info

Anesthesiologist Summary:
An anesthesiologist is a physician who has been trained in the study of medications and administers these medications to help patients manage pain because of an injury or accident, during and after surgery, and during certain medical procedures.

An anesthesiologist usually works in a hospital or trauma medical center. An anesthesiologist deals with scheduled procedures as well as emergency cases, such as accidents or injuries that require immediate surgery.

Education and Training: To become an anesthesiologist, 4 years of undergraduate study are required. Then, the anesthesiologist must complete 4 years of medical school and an additional 3 to 8 years of residency. Once this schooling and training is finished, the student can become a certified anesthesiologist by passing the American Board of Anesthesiologists Certification Exam (re-certification exam must be passed every 10 years) and the state licensing exam. Each state in the United State has a licensing exam for anesthesiologists.
